Elbridge Gerry Lapham, who represented New York'ln the United States senate In the early ’Bo’s, was born in the town of Fanningham, N. Y, 10P yean the profession of a civil engineer* Later he studied law and in 1844 was admitted to the bar. He was a member of the constitutional convention of* New York In 1867; a representative fat congress from 1876 until 1881, la which latter year he was elected Us the United States senate to take tb» place of Roscoe Conkllng, who had resigned.
