Virginia Governor’s Mansion.
The spirits of history, of sentiment and of beauty rise to form a triple alliance in protest against the proposal to remodel the first floor of the governor’s mansion.- To them it Is almost an act of vandalism to'break the Bplendid sweep of the central hall with a stairway, to'obstruct the view from the entrance, to obliterate the effect of space given by the wide interior entrances to right and left, to instill a cramped feeling into all who enter, to make any changes In an interior the most distinctive historically and architecturally of all the state executive mansions. There are improvements to be made In the rooms of the upper floor, and probably In other parts of the house. Smaller and more bedrooms, for instance, are needed. But the first floor can only be ruined by the contemplated “improvements.” Rich in history, beautiful In design and comfortable in arrangements, tt should not he touched.
