Items of Interest From Newton County Enterprise
A. D. Washburn and family and T. B. Cunningham and family left Tuesday for a two weeks’ vacation in the lake region of Wisconsin. The trip is being made by automobile, and they are carrying a full camping outfit. Trustee Hazel announces the appointment of Miss Mary Seal as a member of the public library board to succeed Mrs. Oscar Phelps, whose term has expired. Miss Seal is a very competent young lady and will doubtless fill the place most acceptably. Mrs. LeNore Allen has tendered her resignation as a member of the school board and a successor will probably be named at the next meeting of the town board. Mrs. Allen has served one year, and resigns because the duties of the office demand more time than she is able to give. iGeorge H. Bell, a former resident of Newton county, died at his home in Danville at noon, Thursday, Aug. 6. Mr. Bell had been sick about two weeks, but up to the hour of his death his condition was not considered serious, and it was be lieved he was slowly Improving. While out riding two weeks previous he suffered a hemorrhage, or bursting of a blood vessel in the region of the lungs. A canvass of the business men of Kentland was made Monday by a committee of the commercial club to ascertain the sentiment concerning the fall festival, or public entertainment contemplated. About 25 expressed opposition to any form -of public entertainment this fall, owing to crop conditions and other matters that seem to Interfere. A few were indifferent, and only about a half dozen manifested any- enthusiasm.. As a greater unity of purpose is essential to the success of an undertaking of this kind than was shown by the canvass, the event has been declared off.
