Larger Hats for Midseason

SMALL hats still set the pace in millinery, and all our.headwear is measured by small standards. But midsummer demands brimmed hats, and some of those of the midseason, compared with the hats to which we are dally accustomed, seem to deserve to be classed as large. They are very moderately so; the most daring ones have considerable width of brim at the left side, while 'the right side measures from four to five inches. And as they are on the order of the Gainsborough. with the brim turning upward and away from the face at the left, one looks Tor the width of brim that characterises picturesque millinery. K Two attractive, models of this kind are shown in £he picture. One of them is A hemp in a light color and the other is a black straw. The hemp hat has a wide border on the under brim and is supported by a wide bandeau at the left The bandeau ia trimmed with velvet ribbon and a single rosebud with foliage and stem. The same velvet ribbon, with small

compact bouquets, trims the upper brim, and the hat is finished with that last airy touch that belongs to the apex of summertime, a white lace veil. A very similar shape is portrayed made up in black hair braid and black maline. The hat Itself is small, with the brim much wider at left than at the right side. But the overlay of black maline in wide ruffles gives the effect of additional size. No color is introduced into this design. The big satin rose is of black set in black rose foliage. Just now black and white, all black and all white hats are in highest favor. In the third figure a blatk shape of lustrous straw is trimmed with a wired ruffle of lace and a fan of black moire ribbon. White satin daisies, centered with black, are applied to the body of the hat. mounted flat against it. They are set in black satin rose foliage. This shape is medium in size but by comparison with the majority of similar Shapes it may be called large. > JUUA BOTTOMLEY.
