SHIPS TO USE CANAL IN JULY
U. S. War Vessels Will Show World That “Big Ditch” Is Ready for Trade. San Diego, Cal.—United States warships of the* Atlantic fleet will steam through the Panama canal early in July, speed "up the Pacific coast to San Diego and return to Hampton Roads by the same route, according to Franklin D. Roosevelt, assistant secretary of the navy, who inspected San Diego harbor and made preliminary arrangements for the reception of the battleships. The purpose of this early jaunt through the canal, he said, was to prove; to the world that the big waterway is in readiness to accommodate shipping.
