Frankfort Laborers Struck For Increase ot Wages. A strike occurred this Thursday morning among the sewer hands who are working on the Washington street joib. In order to expedite the work the council authorized the marshal to have the Frankfort laborers who were 'here to build the new brick street to also do the sewer work. The sewer is to be lowered some two feet in order to accommodate the basements along the street The boss of the Prankfort gang, it is understood, was to have received 35 cents per hour for each man employed. The men themselves, however, are reported to have been working for 25 cents an hour. They learned tljat the Rensselaer ditchers were getting 35 cents an hour and the ‘‘bottom!’ men 50 cents an hour and they went on a strike. The wages of some were increased to 30 cents per hour and they returned to work, while several were still out at noon. It is just as well that they remained out, however, for some water trouble in the bottom of the ditdh makes It impracticable to use a large force. The council wisely decided to have the sewer lowered before the new street is constructed. There Is some speculation, however, § as to whether the ground above the sewer will be solid enough to support the brick street without causing a sag later as it settles. This can probably be overcome by thoroughly soaking the earth as the ditch is filled up. To take care of the sewage While the ditch is being repaired a connection was made with the sewer on the north side of Washington street, at Cullen street, a ditch being dug across from the McFarland grocery corner.
