Frankfort Laborers Struck For Increase ot Wages. A strike occurred this Thursday morning among the sewer hands who are working on the Washington street joib. In order to expedite the work the council authorized the marshal to have the Frankfort laborers who were 'here to build the new brick street to also do the sewer work. The sewer is to be lowered some two feet in order to accommodate the basements along the street The boss of the Prankfort gang, it is understood, was to have received 35 cents per hour for each man employed. The men themselves, however, are reported to have been working for 25 cents an hour. They learned tljat the Rensselaer ditchers were getting 35 cents an hour and the ‘‘bottom!’ men 50 cents an hour and they went on a strike. The wages of some were increased to 30 cents per hour and they returned to work, while several were still out at noon. It is just as well that they remained out, however, for some water trouble in the bottom of the ditdh makes It impracticable to use a large force. The council wisely decided to have the sewer lowered before the new street is constructed. There Is some speculation, however, § as to whether the ground above the sewer will be solid enough to support the brick street without causing a sag later as it settles. This can probably be overcome by thoroughly soaking the earth as the ditch is filled up. To take care of the sewage While the ditch is being repaired a connection was made with the sewer on the north side of Washington street, at Cullen street, a ditch being dug across from the McFarland grocery corner.

TAMPICO FALLS TO CONSTITUTIONAUSTS
Mexican Rebels Reported in Full Control of Beaport Towp Gen. m»»« Loaos Command.. • The Mexican affair simmered down to a singel column wide today. -i , . j ■ However, the dispatches disclose much that indicates that U. 8. intervention is needed to allay the warring factions. Tampido is said to have been evacuated by the federate Wednesday noon, after the constitutionalists had made a terrific onslaught on the city. The rebels were entering the town and taking full charge. “ This is the first seacoast town held by the rebels and is second in importance to Vera Cruz, now In control of the United States. The embargo on arms from the United States has cut oft the supply to Carranza and Villa. It will now be possible for them to receive arms and ammunition at the Tam: pico port from other . countries. Should this be done and the United States undertake to stop it, complications with the rebels would ensue. In the meantime General Maas, in command of the federal troops near Vera Cruz, is reported to have been relieved of his command and General Garda Pena placed in command: The meaning of this Charge is not understood by our “watchful waiters.” The A. S. 0. mediation program goes forward and the principals to the program are to assemble at Niagara Falls, Canada, Monday. The diplomats of foreign countries expect the plan to fail* while the people of the United States are chagrined to think that this country has submitted to the South American countries for adjustment a question involving the destruction of American property, the killing of American citizens, the imprisonment of American diplomats and the insulting of the American flag. , In Chicago Wednesday 200,000 people paid tribute to Sammy Heisenberg, a young Jew who lost his life at Vera Cruz, and whose body had been returned for burial. Flags the country over were at half mast for he and other young heroes. In Rensselaer John O’Connor had a flag draped across the porch of his residence and a black ribbon pinned to it to emphasize the respect which we pay to our dead heroes.

The supreme court banded down a decision in the case of tbe State of Indiana ex rel Jay W. Stockton vs. E. P. Mr. Stockton, however, does not intend to remain beaten and today has W. W. Lowry, an Indianapolis attorney, taking up the case to reinstate it in court. The iJbstract of the supreme court decision follows: State of Indiana ex rel Stockton vs. Lane, trustee. White C. C. Appeal dismissed. Morris, C. J. JOHN P. CARR RACK IN EDITORIAL HARNESS
|le la Likewise Back in Republican Party and Will Support The G. O. P. This Year. Indianapolis, Ind., May 13.—While at republican state headquarters In the Hotel Severin today, John P. Carr, who as publisher of the Republican-Leader at Fowler, Ind., supported Roosevelt and Beveridge in 1912, announced that he would •soon begin the publication of a republican newspaper in Fowler to be known as the Fowler Tribune. Mr. Carr is ohe of the best known newspapermen in the state. After the election in 1912 Mr. Carr sold the Fowler Republican-Lead er, which continued Progressive. A short time ago this paper for lack of popular support suspended publication, and Mr. Carr, who had retired to bis farm, at once began laying plans for the establishment of a newspaper to support the republican party. In 1393 Mr. Carr established the Fowler Leader and some time later he purchased the Republican and combined, the two under the name of the RepublicanLeader. “The republicans of Indiana at the recent comention adopted a great platform,” said Mr. Carr. “There is now every reason wby one who ever believed the principles of tbe republican party should support the party and its ticket. Democratic mismanagement of affairs is rabidly crystalling sentiment in favor of the republican party.” Mr. Carr announced that the first issue of the new republican paper would appear next week.

HOBOES EXPECT TO PROVE AN ALIBI
Looks Like They Would Have Difficulty to Clear Themselves of 7 Charge of Arson. The two hobqes who were arrested at Shelby on a charge at arson and who were brought here and lodged In jail, are taking their confinement with some disappointment. They claim that they are not guilty and will he able to show that they remained all of the night in question at the home of a Keener township farmer, near the scene of the fire. Citizens, however, claim that they have positive identification of the men as the ones who left the burning mill. The Chicago man states that he has been out of employment and roaming around for about two months. The Detroit man says that he is a machinist by trade. He seems to be the oldest in trampling experience and was resting in a hammock when a reporter for The Republican called on him. • The other man talked freely and said that they had waived the preliminary examination because they thought they would get an immediate trial in the circuit court and not knowing that the next term of court was four months away. The men were not armed when arrested, but were going along the track, carrying three carp, which a fisherman had given them and which they were discussing how they would cook. They had deeided to try to trade two of the fish to some Shelby housewife for laid and flour and salt to use In cooking the other one. When they were commanded to halt and throw up their hands they thought it was the game wardens after them, so they said. There are two other inmates of the jail now, Henry D. Vance and Billy Lyons, the latter a Remington citizen who falls a periodical victim to John Barleycorn and whose last sentence was for 25 days. The Salisbury's give an up to date entertainment; everything new.

Telephone Company Has Reduced Soane Toll Rates.
The new owners of the Jasper County Telephone Co. report that they have made the following toll rate reductions; - - lit. Ayr from 20 cent* to 15 cents. (Morocco from 25 cents to 20 cents. Brook from 25 cents to 20 cents. The matter of a reduction to Remington has not yet been taken up, but it is probable that the rate will be lowered to at least 15 cents. The present rate Is 20 cents. An investigation recently conducted by The Republican showed that in many places there was a 10 eent rate to all points within the county and that the toll rates here were uniformly (too high. Messrs. Clark and Bott have talked very fairly about the matter and promise to consider further reductions as they fed their way along.
