The Chicago Tribune, the leading progressive paper of the middle west, is astute enough to read the signs of the times and frank enough to publisih the truth in its news columns. In a letter from New York recently by one of its staff correspondents was the following: “It is almost Inevitable that the republican party will come back to power in New York state next fall. Four years of democratic misrule has disgusted the electorate of New York state. “A prominent democratic politician has estimated the New York vote as being 40 per cent republican, 30 per cent democratic, 20 per cent progressive and 10 per cent independent. In recent years the republicans have not been able to register even their party vote, which accounts for the democratic victories. The coming year, however, it is. expected that tjie republicans will poll their Whole vote and the vote of the independents. as well." In the same letter is the following bold assertion: ‘The progressive party has produced no figures of national calibre, excepting Theodore Roosevelt, of New York,”
