Founder of Californian City.
Charles Marie Weber, a German immigrant, who founded the city of Stockton, Cal., was born 100 years ago in Rhenish, Bavaria. At the age of twenty-two he came to America and settled for a time in New Orleans. He next went to Texas, and served in a military capacity under Gen. Sam Houston. In 1841 he started for California with a few companions. He Obtained a grant of 48,000 acres in the San Joaquin valley, and on the present site of the city of Stockton he first encamped with 100 horses. Through the years of danger and turmoil that followed he never abandoned his plan of settlement, but carried it to success. Through his activity in protecting the American settlers against the Mexicans he was thrown into prison. Commodore Stockton came to his aid, and in gratitude Weber named his new settlement after the American officer. He laid out the city of Stockton and lived to see it develop into a flourishing community. He died in Stockton in 1881.
