Jay Gould, American amateur court tennis champion, won the ( open professional championship of the world Wednesday at Philadelphia from George F. Covey, of England, the professional title holder. Removal of snow from New York streets this winter, the street cleaning commission announced, cost $2,400,000. About SIOO,OOO more must be expended before the streets could be pronounced in normal condition. Theer were eight storms and about 35 inches of snow fell. * The famous library of the duke of Devonshire, has been acquired by Henry E. Huntington for $1,700,000, through a New York book dealer. The Devonshire library was started early in the 16th century and contains an original copy of Shakespeare's "Hamlet,” valued at $50,000. Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Ecker celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary at their home in Sycamore, 111., Thursday. Mrs. Ecker is 88 years of age and was born at Stark, Herkimer county, New York. Mr. Ecker is 93 and was born at the same town. stolen from his buggy, which was in the rear of Eger’s store about ten days ago. He advertised to pay a reward of $lO for the culprit who stole it. Last night tahe party, evidently fearing apprehension, threw the laprobe into the street north of the railroad, where it was found by A W. Sawin and today it was restored to Mr. Adams.
