It Is announced that Professor D&nysz, of the Pasteur Institute In Paris, has succeeded in producing a bacteriological preparation containing disease germs to which only animals of the rat genus are susceptible. Bait charged with this particular virus when eaten by rats produced a disease which proves fatal in from eight to fourteen days. The disease being communicable to other rats, causes a contagious epidemic among the vermin. As the virus does no harm to cats, dogs, fowls or human beings, and as the rats affected seek the open air and water and do not die in their holes, its discovery ,U the tacts are as announced, must be deemed of the greatest importance. Rats are an active agency In the spread of trichinosis and the dreaded bubonic plague.
