Drexel gave a series of dinner parties for the Russian grand duke, It led to the revival of an old Parisian custom whereby bachelors helped their female friends to act as hosts at entertainments at which women were also invited. Following Mr. Drexel’s example, the Count de Cambaceres, one of

the wealthiest members of the French nobility, gave an evening party attended by the younger members of old families and by society women, who were masked throughout the affair, and left without revealing their identity.
