SWAMPED WATSEKA BENEATH BIG SCORE
Old Rivals Seemed Better at the Start But Red and Black Rdn Over Them at Finish. Rensselaer high school 47;* Watseka high school 0. By that decisive score the red and black defenders put it over their old rivals, who came h?re Saturday after having won three games this fall. It wiped out the 14 to u defeat our high school suffered at the hands of Watseka two years ago. Not only was the victory itself a welcome thing,- but the splendid manner in which the local lads played gives encouragement that the 1913 team is the best that has represented the local high school in many years. . It appears that the’ suceess of this year’s team will not depend upon one or two players, but that an eleven with practically every position, filled with the “stuff” is at hand and that the line men as well as the backs have gridiron ability of the best sort. Rensselaer kicked off Saturday to Lake, who carried the ball back to the 45-yard line. Gates for Watseka made 5 yards, Griffith made 5 and Williams skirted left end for 15. Gates hurdled and ,was penalized 15 yards. A forward pass failed and Lace puted to Eigelsbaeh. Hanley made no gain, Miller made a yard and a- bad pass by Honan was fumbled by Eigelsbaeh. Rensselaer punted to Griffith, who returned 6 yards. Gates made 4 and Griffith 2. and Pierce 2. Lace punted and Eigelsbaeh carried* the ball to our own 25 yard line. Rensselaer was penalized 5 yards ans lost the ball on a fumble. Watseka was held for downs. Rensselaer could mot gain and was again forced to punt. Griffith was downed in his tracks. Watseka again tried a forward pass, which went wront and they again punted. Rensselaer was penalized 5 yards for an offside play. The ball was-yin possession at our S 3 ySroline at the close of the quarter. Rensselaer held like a stone wall when the second quarter opened, Miller and McCarthy helping the line. Groom made 9 yards for Rensselaer, Miller made !, Eigelsbaeh made 7, Miller made 7 and Captain McCarthy made 17 on a long end run., Rensselaer was penalized 15 yards. for hloding. Forward passes .failed. Hanly made 4, and McCarthy 12 and .another forward pass 1 went wrong. Eigelsbaeh punted and Griffith returned 15 yards. Griffith was proving, the best ground gainer for the visitors. The bali went over and back without material advantage during the balance of the half, which ended with the score of 0 to 0. Watseka kicked to Miller on the 12 yard line. On the first down Hanley made 7 yards and McCarthy 4 and another forward pass failed, Eigelsbaeh kicked and Rensselaer recovered the ball. Wilcox made 30 yards on a forward pass, Eigelsbach made 15 and McCarthy 2. After Hanley had lost 3 yards McCarthy undertook a drop kick, but failed. Griffith made 7 yards for Watseka and on the next down lost the ball on a fumble, Swaim recovering ft. Rensselger was again penalized 15 yards. Eigelsbaeh made 18 yards and Groom made 15. McCarthy made 8, Miller 4 and McCarthy went over for a touchdowlT Miller kicked goal. After the kick off Pierce made 12 yards for Watseka. Miller # was hurt and Harry Moore took his place, a change in the backs following. After a few exchanges of the ball with small advantage Pierce punted to Eigelsbaeh, who carried the ball back 55 yards. Hanley made 3 yards, McCarthy and Eigelsbaeh each made short gains and McCarthy went over for the second touch down Eigelsbaeh failed to kick goal. Watseka now seemed about all in and their fight was very feeble the balance of the game. Watseka tried a forward pass which Hanley intercepted and carried 35 yards, within a yard of a touch* down. Eigelsbaeh went over on the first down. He failed to kick goal. The score was now 19 to 0. Watseka never made their 10-yard gain after this time. They fumbled repeatedly and Lakins made one good recovery. Swim broke through the lino several times and tackled for a loss. Honan also made several good tackles. Rensselaer got its ends to working far down on the forward passes and several of them worked successfully and Grbom bowled over all* the players in his pathway, making the next three touch downs after forward Pass runs. McCarthy made the final touch down, bringing the score up to 47. McCarthy played a game, especially being on the job in the first quarter when Watseka was threatening. Miller was strong In defense. Swim was the -shining star of the line and looks to be one of the best linemen in years. Eigles4)ach is a heady quarter, cool and ’resourceful. Harry Moore has the fight that wins in. football and made a fine showing for a beginner. Hanley played his first game at half and was not as strong as he was last year 6n end, but his Interference was good and his long run after intercepting a forward pass
was one of the spectacular plans of the day. Honan worked good at center. The punting is weak and the kick offs lack steam. There Is an opening for a real kicker.
