Two Opinions of J. A. McFarland
BABCOCK “The Democrat is opposed to J. A. McFarland * * * because of the remarks he has made against the Catholics and some of the Catholic organizations.” Following this objection on the part of The Democrat is the publication of a sycophantish praise of the Catholic church and its institutions here. The publication was made, not as a sudden outburst of enthusiasm for the church or its people, but with an effort to inspire Catholic distrust of Mr. McFarland.
CITIZEN A citizen who stands high in this community remarked to the writer substantially as follows: "McFarland has been lied about in a depraved effort to injure him and his business before the Catholics of this city and surrounding country. It is the most deplorable and shameful effort I have ever seen to stir up a religious war in this city or any place else. If inspired by Ed Hooan or was published with his consent It is a pitiful lapse of Honan’s generally shrewd methods.”
