DESCRIBES HARDSHIPS IN LEAVING MEXICO

Perry Gwin Traveled Fourteen Days Overland Carrying SIB,OOO of the Company’s Money. In a letter written to his parents by Perry Gwin, after arriving at El Paso, Tex., some two weeks ago, he describes his trip and the hardships he underwent, as follows: “I arrived in El Paso Saturday Sight after a fourteen x days’ overind trip on the road from Parrel. I left Parrel wdth the company’s mules, wagon 8, horse,, buggy, books, etc., also about SIB,OOO in money find after a five days’ ‘trip I left everything in Chihauhau wiith our agent there, except the money, which I turned into the El Paso office after arriving here. I passed several times through bands of ‘rebels and several times through the federal lines and had a mighty hard time, but was not molested and got safe ly through )rith the money and an£ mals. But I am completely tired out and my nerves are a wreck. I closed up my office completely in Parrel and left nothing but a watchman, there. “I have lost considerable money lately in several ways. One in the great increase in living. Sugar sold at $1.50 a poiind, matches sold at one cent per match and’were hard to get at that price, matches that were usually given away sold, not for a penny a box, but for a penny a match. Everything else was -high accordingly. I had SIOO stolen from me on h collecting trip. I went to Santa Barbara to collect $l,lOO and I turned in SI,OOO to one of the Guggenheim mines and they gave me a check /for it and the SIOO was stolen from me on my way back to Parral. J.was held up by three men on horses. The exchange now from Mexican money* Into U. S. currency Is .240, Which makes a Mexican doldar worth 40 cents. “Conditions are worse in Mexico than ever before I am too tired to write much flow. I do not know just what I will do, but the first thing will be to rest for a while.” In a postscript Perry writes: “A man came out in auto since I left and he says that after I left the rebels were looking for me and were going to request SIO,OOO from me, so I got away just in time.”
