, „ - Mrs. M. M. Ocher and two Children returned last Saturday from a several days’ visit with,her brother, Robert Mannan and- wife, at Wheatfield. ' •» The Medaryville Star chapter initiated Mrs. Mary Low into the mysteries of\Starhood last Monday evening. They also presented Mr. and Mrs. Glen Clark, "the recently married equple, with a fine rug. Mrs. Joanna Long; has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. D. Pence and family, at Brook, for the past two weeks. Quite a number of the citizens of this locality will visit Fountain Park tomorrow. The program will be a good one. The usual Sunday morning service, Dr. Edgar DeWitt Jones will preach. In the afternoon music by Chicago Ladies’ Orchestra and lecture by Hon. James E. Watson. In the evenings readings by Miss Mabie May and concert by Chicago Ladies’ Orchestra. Frank Hart and family, of DeMotte, spent last Sunday with his mother, Mrs. F. A. Anderson They made the trip by auto. Miss Goldie Biggs, of Wheatfield, was the guest of her uncle, Frank Dunn and wife, and of Mrs. Laura R. Fischer, at her country home, this week. Rev. Thos. M. Guild and niece, Miss Glenn Comer, of Peru, came Tuesday evening for a short visit with relatives. They made the trip in the former’s auto.
Clifford and Viva Baughman, of Royal Center, accompanied by their guest of several weeks, Miss Agnes Brown, autoed over here last Wednesday evening. Miss Ava Guild left Thursday for Goshen, where she will attend the institute, after which she will go to Napanee, where she will teach school the coming term. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kessinger, accompanied by Glenn Brown, left Monday for Canada for possibly a prolonged stay Mr. Kessinger will look after his land interests there. Lewis Kroft, from the U. S. navy, is home on a furlough' and is the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kroft. Lewis is on* the warship Florida, stationed at New York. James Wallace, of Star City, of the same ship, spent his furlough with his relatives in this county and for the past week visited with his brother, date Wallace, and his uncles, Drs. H. G. and J. J. Jones, here. Both young men returned to New York last Wednesday evening. A severe lightning and rain storm visited this locality last Sunday night. West and south of us enoronous quantities of rain fell The cupola of the Gillam church was struck by lightning but the fire was extinguished by the heavy rain which followed it. At Francesville Fred Malehow’s new barn was also struck and burned to the ground. Lightning also played havoc with windmills, haystacks, etc., especially west of us. The Jas. R. Guild family held a reunion at the parental home in this town on Tuesday last, every one of their children and their families being present. They were: Rev. W. B. Warren er, wife and son, of Whiting; Prof. Albert Reep, wife jand two daughters, Marengo, Hl.; Attorney and Mrs. Ralph Horner, Winamac; Mr. Mell Guild, wife and four children, of this place—twenty in all They passed a most enjoyable afternoon and evening. Lightning struck and killed nine head of cattle for Mr. Herman Bremer and Lewis White in a pasture about two miles east of town. Just when the killing took place no one. seems to know, probably during the storm of Sunday or Monday. When found Thursday the carcasses were in an advanced state of decomposition. Eight of the animals were the property of Herman Bremer and one belonged to Lewis White. They were partly insured.
