New Parcels Post Rates Are Now In Operation.
Postmasters in this section have received notification and official rules and regulations for the handling of parcel post mail under the new system of increased size of packages and reduction in rates of postage which goes into effect Aug. 15th. Under the new ruling, packages weighing as much as twenty pounds may be sent hrough the mail by parcel post. The present weight limit, which has been in effect since the inauguration of the new system, is only eleven pounds. Parcel post mail in the local zone will be carried for five cents for the first pound, and one cent for each additional two pounds. Under the old rules the postage rate for the first pound was the same, but for each and every additional pound a rate of one cent was charged. In the first and second zones the rate on the first pound will be five cents with one cent for each additional pound or fraction of a pound. Under the present rate the additional postage for weight of mail above the first pound was Xhree cents for each extra pound in the first zone and four cents in the second zone. The reduction in rates is pointed out in the fact that under the initial rates of parcel post, twenty pound packages mailed for delivery to the second zone would cost eighty-two cents postage. Under the new rate to become effective this month, twenty pounds may be mailed to the second zone for twenty-four cents.
