Girl Referees Duel Between Suitor and Brother
B OSTON.—With a girl as referee and glrlit as seconds, William J. Rounds, Jr., page in the Massachusetts house of representatives, and 'Herbert B. Larner, a high school boy, met on the field of honor near Harvard university and fought a bitter duel. Rounds for the Royalty of his twin sister and Larner for the hand of his sweetheart. The fight all but cost Larner his life. Rounds was arrested on a charge of Btabbing with intent to kill. It is alleged that, when he found he was getting the worst of the fistic encounter, he drew a knife from his pocket and stabbed his adversary in the breast. Miss Lillian Rounds, the girl over whose affection the duel Was fought, is the twin sister of young Roundß. She and Larner had been friends from childhood. In time they became lover? and recently Larner proposed
‘and was accepted. As sweethearts are wont to do, Miss Rounds and Larner kept the engagement secret. Her brother hated Lamer. He tried to persuade his sister to give him up, but she refused. At times the two quarreled over this difference. Finally Lillian after one of their numerous dashes telephoned to. Lamer about her trouble. - Her sweetheart instructed Miss Rounds to tell her brother that he would be over that night to give him a mticli needed lesson. He would show him how to treat his sister. “Let him try,” growled Rounds. The duel was arranged. Fists were to be the weapons. If Rounds won, Larner had to give up courting his sister. If Lamer won Rounds had to withdraw all objection. > That night the five want to a field near Harvard university. Rounds was accompanied by Miss Beryl Grogan, as referee. Lamer arrived wit*. Miss Lillian Rounds, while Miss Fanny Rounds, another sister, came along to be second for her brother. Miss Grogan gave the Bignal. The boys rushed at each other and fought fiercely with the battle against young Rounds. Then in a flash he drew back and in another instant there was a glitter of steel and Lamer was on the ground, stabbed in the chest.
