The Bar Habit

The pernicious habit of drinking standing at the bar is of Puritanical New England origin, the theory being that a man would sooner got drunk and go home if standing than sitting —a whisky custom, but very bad for boor which New Englanders knew not, for to stand to ths bar to drink and to keep drinking to stand there is not gentlemanly nor wholesome.
