EUGENE PURTELLE LANDS IN JAIL
Banks Turn Down Cheeks Issued for Right-of-Way and Arrest Follows.
Eugene Purtelle, the interarban railroad promoter who failed to build a road through Rensselaer, and who is novf building a road from Tipton to Frankfort, is in jail in the latter city, or was at last accounts, for issuing checks for which there was no funds in the banks to take them up. B. J. Moore, of Rensselaer, has been superintending the grading of the road, and has expressed great confidence in Purtelle making good on that project. • The Frankfort Times has the following to say of the arrest: “Eugene Purtelle, promoter of the Tipton-Frankfort traction line, is a prisoner in the county jail here, charged wiUK issuing fraudulent checks oh two local banks to the aggregate of $1,200. Purtelle was arrested in Tipton yesterday and brought to this city by Sheriff Miller. He admits that his arrest is due to the failure of his Chicago backers to forward funds to Tipton to meet the checks, which were given to Clinton county farmers for right-ofway for the proposed line. He expects the Chicago financiers to come to his aid today. Local banks have been cashing his checks for the past six weeks and up until the past few days there has been funds in the Tiptqn banks to meet them. ’ Purtelle made an effort last night to obtain bond, but failing, was compelled to spend the night in jail.”
