DENTISTS VICTIMS OF MIDNIGHT ROBBER
Drs. Horton and Rusow Had About S6O Worth of Gold and Finished Work Stolen. Some time Thursday night a gold thief jobbed the dental parlor of Dr. J. W. Hofton, getting about S6O worth of gold and carrying away a S4O completed bridge and crown job. ' Dr. Horton and wife were in Indianapolis attending the dental association meeting, and Dr. J. Ruzow, who is associated with Dr. Horton, remained in the dental parlors until about If o’clock. He was careful to lock the doors as he left and this Friday morning when he returned to work he found the rear door which opens to the hall work room, open. He at once surmised that something was wrong and went to the gold drawer and found that it had been stripped clean. He next went to a small cabinet at the operating chair and found that a completed bridge and crown job had been taken. He estimates the value of the gold stolen at S6O. There was no trace whatever of the thief. The last dental gold thief that visited Rensselaer worked .during the noon hour and Dr. W. L. Myer was ithe victim.
MEMORIAL PROGRAM HAS BEEN COMPLETED
Line of March as in Past Years— G. A. R. Ladies Will Serve Suppers to Veterans. The program for the Memorial Day exercises has been completed and will' be printed in The Republican Saturday. The Sunday Schools and lodges and citizens will assemble on the court house lawn and march .to the cemetery over the route used in previous years. Attorney J. A. Dunlap will deliver the address at the cemetery. After the return to the court house the Ladies of the G. A. R. will serve their annual supper to the old soldiers in the G. A. R. hall in the basement of the court house. Last year the ladies fed over two hundred at the hall and the work was so great that it has been decided this year to limit the at-, tendance to the old soldiers. The spirit in which this limitation is made is the kindliest, but the ladies realize that it is too much of a task to feed so many as was done a year ago.
HARVE HEMPHILL HAD CLOSE CALL
Young Blacksmith Overcome by Paint and Timely Discovery Saved His Life. Harve Hemphill, partner with his brother, James, in the blacksmith business, at their father's old stand on Front street, had a very close call this Friday afternoon from death. A large tank had been constructed tor W. F. Smith & Co., and a small aperature was in one end of it. Harve climbed into the tank to paint it, not fearing any trouble. The paint fumes, however, overcame him and he fell in a faint Inside the tank, where he doubtless would have soon perished but for his discovery, which was accidental. Some one came to the shop hunting for Harve's father, and Dave Hines, one of the .blacksmiths, stepped out back of the shop to ask Harve where his father was. He discovered the fix Harve was in and called his brother, Jim, who entered the tank and pulled Harve out. It was some time before he was restored to consciousness. No permanent 111 effects are probable.

GOODNER RELEASED AFTER ARRIVAL HERE
Man Who Skipped Out in 1908 Has Secured Confidence of Doctor at MitcheU, 8. Dak. Perry Goodner, the mafi who skipped out from Rensselaer on the night of Sept. 12, 1908, taking with him a team of mules said to have been mortgaged to John F. Judy, of Warren county, and a buggy belonging to John M. Knapp, of Rensselaer, was brought here Friday afternoon by Sheriff Hoover. As related in these columns several days ago, Hoover went to Mitchell, S. Dak., to get his man, having caused his arrest after requisitions had been procured from the governors of Indiana and North Dakota. Goodner was confined in a jail in the basement of the court house at Mitchell, the sanitary conditions of which Sheriff Hoover says are bad. Goodner was frightened and reported that he had eaten scarcely nothing since his arrest the Saturday before Hoover’s arrival, whicU was Wednesday morning. He waved all requisition matters after he learned that the sheriff had prepared himself with these papers. He arrived here Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock and was at once taken before Squire Irwin and bound over to the circuit court. His bond was fixed at S3OO and this was arranged tor, Dr. King, a physician at Mitchell, 8. Dak., wiring a cash bond to the First National Bank of Rensselaer. Goodner was released and started back to Mitchell, only four hours from the time of his arrival. Sheriff Hoover states that Goodner war known at MitcheU by,the name of Harry Brown and that he had been there about four years and had been farming on his own hook. This year he moved to a larger farm than he had been running before, and Dr. King, of Michell, is backing him. He had several head of cows and 20 head of sows and other stock and from what Sheriff Hoover could learn he was making good. Goodner was recently married, under his right name, the sheriff thinks.

RHOADES & SOM | Rensselaer, Indiana. I
The charge here Is, however, a serious one, and Goodner will be lueky If he escapes with anything short of a penitentiary sentence. His arrest was made on an affidavit sworn out soon after the buggy was stolen. Goodner had a family here and they remained for some time after he skipped out. They never heard from him and it Is reported that Mrs. Goodner afterward procured a divorce, but if she did ill was after her removal
