COLLEGEVILLE.
Thursday, May 1, being Ascension Day, is a holiday and hence there are no classes. In the evening the annual Conroy Oratory Contest is held. / * The game scheduled with Loyola Academy for last Friday had to be cancelled on account of the heavy rain. Although the team arrived at .Rensselaer, the grounds were in such condition that playing was impossible. The following visitors were with us during the week: Miss Mary Fogarty, Springfield, Ohio; Mrs. J. C. Collins, Mrs. M. J. Dermody, Misses Catherine and Clara Ambos, Joseph Jung, Hammond; Mrs. Hugh McCaffrey, Peru; Mr. and Mrs. Maschek, J. J. Zaeringer, Miss Mary Zaeringer, Mrs. F. J. Annen, Mrs. F. F. Murphy, Chicago. Sunday afternoon the Varsity lost its first game when they were defeated by the strong St. Xavier team in a ten-inning contest by the score of 2 to 1. It was far too cold sor 1 good base ball and the heavy work was done by the pitchers. In every inning there were men on bases, but the more tightly, the sacks were filled the harder the pitchers worked. The Varsity scored their run in the fourth, when with two hands down, Steffes singled and Lili followed with a threebase drive to the right field corner of the campus. % St. Xavier scored both their runs' in passed balls, one by Steffes and the other by Petzold. It was a hard game to lose, and a good game to win. It was hard on Lili to have his team-mates lose for him his last college game, when he twirled such masterful ball, allowing but three hits and striking out 15 batters. Umpires, Rachor and Brunswick.
