Says C. F. Mansfield Has A Fine Start With Alfalfa.
Prof. M. L Fisher, of Purdue University, who has made two or three previous visits to Jasper county to advise with C. F. Mansfield, owner of a large farm southeast of Rensselaer, about the preparation of soil and the .sowing of alfalfa, was here agin Tuesday and in company with Mr. Mansfield visited the farm and inspected the alfalfa, of which he has about 70 acres, planted at various times since last spring. One fledr was planted about a year ago, after the land had been inoculated with sweet, clover soil. Other fields were planted last fall and all show a splendid stand. Mr. Mansfield followed the instructions of Prof. Fisher in the main, and then done some experimenting on his own hook. He had about fifteen acres that was in a sand ridge and he had about ten wagon loads of ditch bank soil, which contained considerable lime, hauled on each aere, and also used the sweet clover soil, rolling it down solid before planting the alfalfa. In another field he disced through timothy stubble, using the ditch bank soil and the sweet clover soil. In both cases the alfalfa has a splendid stand and Prof. Fisher found an interesting study in each case and will watch the result with interest. P|of. Fisher is regarded as one of the country’s best soil experts and most able agriculturists and he states that the stand of alfalfa Mr. Mansfield has is an assurance that the product can be profitably grown in this part of Indiana. He believes thatall of the Mansfield alfalfa will yield two and part of it three crops this year.
