OLD MERCURY HIT MARK OF 14 BELOW

Quietly Slipped to Lowest Point of Winter and Assured Crop of Quietly and without a particle of fuss to let people know what was happening, the mercury sank to 14 degrees below zero last night, the third time it has been lower than zero during the winter* and 8 degrees colder than it was Monday night. People emerged from their warm beds this morning with no thought that it was so cold and those who consulted thermometers wdre half inclined to discredit them, when at 7 o’clock they found the mercury still 10 below zero. A few minutes exposure, however, convinced them that it was indeed quite cold.
