A butternut-clad individual, who succeded in making good hta escape, came across to our camp, and expatiated most eloquently on the rigidness with which the conscription was enforced south of the Tennessee river tn 1864. “Do they conscript close over the river?” asked one of the pickets. “Stranger. 1 should say they do? They take every man wbo hasn’t been dead more'n two days.”
