C. L. PARKS AND FAMILY IN TENNESSEE
Write From Manchester Describing Trips to Mountains, Cave and Battle Field. Manchester, Tenn. Dec. 23, 1912. Rensselaer Republican, Rensselaer, Ind. Dear Friends: We had a very pleasant trip after leaving Rensselaer December 9th. We stopped at Louisville, Ky., where we changed cars for Nashville. We reached Nashville on the evening of Dec. 10th, and spent the night and part of the next day at Murfreesboro; we saw the old breastworks where the battle was fought. We came to Manchester December 11th and met several Jasper county friends, who were glad to hear from Indiana and their old neighbors. The Cumberland mountains are about twelve miles from Manchester. We went to the mountains, where we spent three days. With the guide we had a pleasant trip up the mountains to the highest peak, which was a mile or more high. We were near the Wild Cat distillery and saw the ruins of the buildings. We saw several mountain homes. It was a very warm day and one plum tree was white with bloom. We picked persimmons and gathered holly boughs and nuts. We visited Copper Cave, which is about one-half mile from Manchester. It was a semi-circle, and a creek led near the entrance. Several springs on the cliff above the cave, emptied their cool waters over a stony cliff near the entrance of the cave. We were to the falls in Little and Big Duck rivers. They were rushing Over the rocks and were very beautiful. It has been beautiful warm weather most of the time, but is cool at night and freezes a thin coat of ice, but as soon as the sun comes out it is pleasant and most everyone has the doors open. v \We have some rain each week. Ifcds warm and jaining here today. We will begin light housekeeping in Manchester this week, and will spend a month or more here.
