THE PARCELS POST ZONES AND RATES

Figures of This Table Will Be Useful Before Long and It Should Be Saved. The Parcels Post system will be inaugurated, at the postoffice Jan. 1, 1913. It trill be possible under this system to send packages weighing up to eleven pounds, provided

they are small enough to wrap a string 72 inches long around lengthwise and widthwise. The postage wiU be based on the weight of package and the distance carried. The entire United States Jhas been mapped into rectangles, each of which is a zone center, and every postoffice has been furnished with a map showing the zones as measured from that particular center. Rensselaer is in rectangle No. 2,017, which includes an area of one-half geographical degree each way. This is the center-.of a series of concentric circles ranging from 50 to 1,800 miles in radius. The areas between these circled are called zones, and

the rates of postage vary with the distance of the zone from the center. These rates are shown in the table herewith: After January Ist there will be no 4th class of mail matter, all mail heretofore belonging to that class being entitled to the Parcels Post rate, which is much lower. A 2-pound package, which now costs 32 cents to send to Chicago or Indianapolis, can be sent by Parcels Post for 10 cents, and for 5 cents extra it will be insured up to a value of $25. Packages weighing four ounces or less will still be carried at one cent per ounce regard; less of distance.
