DR. BERNARD MALOY FREED OF CHARGE
Net Prosecuted on Criminal Libel Charge Preferred by Head of the Steger Piano Works. 'At Joliet, 111., last Saturday Dr. Bernard S. Maloy, of Steger, 111., and Thomas R. Thompson, western editor of the Musical Courier, were freed by Judge Dibell. They were arraigned more than four months ago on a charge of criminal libel against the head of the Steger Piano Co. In Illinois a person arraigned on a criminal charge must be tried within four months and- this had not been done.. Readers of The Republican will remember that Dr. Maloy, who is an old RensselaeT boy, had trouble with Steger, who is or apparently sought to be the whole thing in the town of his name. Most citizens submitted it but Dr. Maloy, who has a mind of his own rebelled against the one-man authority. This made him unpopular and he was abused and cast into jail on no substantial grounds. He was not downcast by the persecution, but made his fight mighty warm for Steger. His cause .was taken up by The Musidal Coqrier and Steger methods were published broadcast. The suits followed, but they were not tried, the Stegers evidently not caring to have the charges exposed in detail. It looks like a quite complete victory for “Bernie.”
