A girl was born August 23rd, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDonald. Born, August 24, a boy, to Mr. and Mrs. John Newcomb. A boy was born August 25th, to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Messenger. A boy was born Tuesday, August 27, to Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Chupp, of Newton township. > With only ten more -days to serve, Charles Ross attempted to escape from the penitentiary at Onondago, N. Y., yesterday and was shot to death by keepers. Ross worked at loading stone on cars. On the way to dinner he bolted when the gang crossed a highway. Guards called upon him to halt, but he kept on, and they opened fire. According to figures compiled for. the American Telegraph & Telephone company there were 22,000,000,000 telephone calls throughout the world in 1911. Of this total the United States had more than 14,000,000,000, or 66 per cent. These figures indicate that the telephone is more generally used in the country than in all the rest of the world combined. Business men from New York are to establish the first butterfly farm in the world at Red Bank, N. J. They will raise butterflies of all varieties, specializing in specimens of brilliant coloring and highly decorative appearance. The product of the farm is to be sold to society women, who will this be able to satisfy their whim for having butterflies in their conservatories and parlors. ag The Rev. J. C. Todd, pastor of the Christian church at Bloomington, has resigned his charge to become pastor of the students of that denomination attending Indiana university. Mr. Todd’s resignation came as a surprise to his congregation.
