A very recent secretary of state one day looked up from his desk and suddenly asked: ‘T>o you speak Spahish, Mr. Jones?” .\. “No, air, I am sorry to say I do not,” the clerk addressed replied regretfully. “Too bad,-too bad!” the secretary commented, and turned again to his papers. The clerk had visions,of an offered appointment as Secretary of Legar tion at Madrid, and that very night set diligently to work to acquire the language of the Dons, and with unusual success. Two months later he ventured to suggest: “Mr. Secretary, a short while ago you asked me if I was familiar with Spanish. At that time I was not, but I have since mastered it.” "Indeed? Very good,” the secretary said. “Have you become really proficient in the language in this short time?* “It seemed to come easy—l suppose that accounts for it, sir,” the. clerk modestly admitted.
