Ambition will lead its slaves to queer antics and often makes acrobats of persons who needed crutches. There are a great many republicans who do not believe the party that has brought prosperity to the country by prudent legislation has for a moment forgotten that its success was because it existed for the people and by the people. Yet ambition would lead a successful party into strange pastures, after strange gods and have It cutting didos with future disaster. Let the republican slogan be “Keep the people ruling,” and we can not go amiss.
