Seasons’ Rifle Practice Begun on Range at Parr.
Local militiamen are taking considerable interest in range rifle practice and twenty members of the company have already fired all or part of the marksman’s course, over the 200, 300 and 500 yard ranges. First Sergeant Jerry B. Garland Is in a class all by himself and he not only was the highest in the early stages of firing by a margin of 20 points but has made a sharpshooter’s score with 17 points to spare and to apply on an expert’s score, which he will doubtless be able to complete tlje first time over the range. Several of those who fired have made marksman’s scores, which gives them a grade of 100 and others have entered the lift and 2nd class stages. Members will fire on the range each Sunday and the scores will be published later. Friday night of this week Sergeant Instructor Ross Latshaw, of the U. S. Ist Infantry, will conduct a school for non-commis-sioned officers and on Saturday night the regular weekly drill will be held under his instruction. Saturday night will also be the time for having the semi-annual pay and a full attendance is desired. Sunday Sergeant Latshaw will accompany the riflemen to the range and have charge of the instruction. • The best shooting Garland did Sunday was from the 500 yard range. He hit the bullseye the first 10 shots, missed it the 11th by an inch, and again found it the 12th shot, completing a score of 59 out of a possible 60 at that range. There is a fine prospect of developing a 5-man team this year that will compete with any similar team in the state.

BIG INCREASE IN ASSESSED VALUES.
All Rut Rensselaer City and Newton Township Show Substantial Taxa« , . tlon Increase This Year. » 1 Jasper county showed a big increase in taxable valuations according to the assessment fipires just compiled and fijed by the yarious township assessors In the office of County Assessor John Q. Lewis. Newton township and the city of Bahsselaer showed the only decrease and there seems no reasonable cause for a lessening of taxable property in these. The following table shows the increase and loss in the various townships and corporations: Increase Increase Loss Polls Barkley $54,630 34 Carpenter . .47,590 12 Giilam .31,965 8 Hr Grove 25,830 \ 1 Jordan 44,185 25 Kankakee 5,119 ;f ■ A Keener 24,130 11 Marion... 47,197 21 Milroy *. 13,485 16 Newton ~... $9,330 5 Union 27,450 9 Walker 51,820 33 Wheatfield ....9,930 13 Rensselaer 11,760 64 Remington 52,714 13 Wheatfield TownT. .14;540 13 Total $.450,585 $21,090 279 There was a net increase of taxables of $429,495, the largest gain being in Barkley township, and the next largest in the town of Remington. In Remington and CarpeUter township the total increase was In excess of SIOO,000. The large increase In polls is difficult to account for, every township and corporation showing a, gain,' the largest being in Rensselaer. There was also an increase in the school enumeration as shown by the figures re-* cently compiled in the office of Countj| Superintendent Lamson. 'i’he large property increase will 'furnish conn! siderable extra revenue, which will readily be used up in the expense of registration board, public accountant visitors, etc., expensive measures: passed by a democratic legislature. Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Thewlius, of Linden, where he is now engaged in the: garage business, came to Rensselaer; by auto Sunday morning, and spent the day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.! James Jordan, who accompanied them on the return trip as far as Lafayette and returned home on ,the evening train. .... .. ■ . To guard trans-Atlantic steamers from the dangers of icebergs Secretary Meyer of the navy department started an ocean patrol service Friday. He ordered the scout cruiser Birmingham to the .southward of the Grand Banks to notify steamers with its powerful wireless system of the location of icebergs. The Michigan Central Railroad company was indicted Friday on'»thirty counts for false billing of shimnents by the federal grand Jury -a# Indianapolis; which also indicted Chapin ft Co., of Milwaukee, in the same connection for shlicitihg and accepting concessions fj-om the railroad. Chapin ft Co. have a plant at Hammond. The penalty for each offense in case a verdict, of guilty is found' is $5,000. J. P. Simons received several pension blanks' a few days ago from Congressman Crumpacker. These blanks are used by the soldiers to secure their increase in pensions, if they der serve it, under the new pension law. J. H. Davenport, commander of pensions, will be swamped with applications from now on, and it may be several months before all the applications can be considered, but all pensions, of deserving, will be increased fi*om the. date of filing of applications. H. W. Freed’s world famous Dog and Pony show will exhibit at Rensselaer, Thursday, May 23. The performance consists of performing dogs, trained ponies and several high class circus acts. One of the principal features is .the act of the musical ponies, consisting of four midget Shetland ponies, who play selections on sunset toned hells. It is a show for ladies and children. Admission 10 and 20 cents. Free street parade at 7 p. m. Doors open at 7:15. Performance begins at 8:15. The appellate court has decided that a township trustee not only has the power to contract for the hauling of children from an abandoned school district, but is by law commanded to do so, and the person who has done the hauling can collect on the contract though it was never authorised by the township advisory board. It reverses the Hendricks circuit court for refusing to allow Virgil Patterson a judgment against Middle school township of Hendricks county on his contract wjth the trustee for the hauling of children. The appellate court orders the lower court to restate Its conclusions of law and give Patterson judgment tor the amount earned under the contract, which will $l3O.
