Duel Fatal to Both.
While two men Were spearing salmon on the Columbia river, in Oregon, they noticed a large, gray eagle hovering over the water, but they paid no particular attention to the bird until it suddenly swooped -down and pounced on a big fish. The fish must have weighed 16 pounds, and it soon became evident that the eagle could not lift It clear of the water. After several ineffectual efforts the bird next tried to release its hold, but it was caught fast as if in a trap. Flnally it was itself dragged into the water, and the swift current swept the odd combatants down stream until they lodged in a fishnet, where both were caught The fish was killed; the eagle was already dead.
