Two Blind Pigs Raided at Lowell by Sheriff Grant
The “soft drink” joints of Jasper Hull and Louis Berg, of Ldwell, were raided Wednesday evening at about 6. o’clock by Sheriff Grant and his deputy. Fred Furman, The sheriff -had warrants for each of the men in addition to a search warrant At Hull’s place no “Jingo,” which he claimed to sell, was found, but 33 full cases of beer and 139 empty cases were found. At , Berg’s place no beer was found, but 33 full cases of “Clearo” was found. It is said to contain 5 per cent alcohol, whereas to come under the soft-drink provision it must contain only one-half of one per cent. Rev. J. H. Johnson, pastor of the M. E. church; Rev. O. Wickham, pastor of the Christian church; Paul Hathaway, a citizen and two Indianapolis detectives, are said to have secured the evidence that led to the warrants being issued. Hull . and Berg were placed under 3500 bonds, the liquids were confiscated I ini a building for safe keeping. Hull is an old mtfti and fainted when the warrant was served on him,. Berg? is also quite an old man but he took his arrest cooly. He was in the saloon business when knocked out by remonstrance
