ELEPHANT AND DONKEY IN RACE

AS THE result of a bet made some months ago by “Uncle Joe” Cannon and Frederick Thompson, an amusement park manager of New York, an elephant and a donkey started the other day in a race from Long Island to Washington— 275 miles. Each animal carried a big sign “1912 or Bust,’’ and the race was a go-as-you-please, to end at the White House steps. Needless to pay, ths former speaker backed the elephant, the stake being a big black cigar.
