} He came down the garden path, a bad, sorrowful figure. She watched him with anxious eyes. “How did father take it?” she asked. “He took it—well,” replied the young man. “Oh, I’m so glad, George!” she cried, pressing her hands together. “Are you?” replied George, flopping forlornly by her side. “Well, I can’t say that 1 am, dear. At first your father wouldn’t listen to me.” “Why didn’t you tell him that you had $2,500 In the bank, as I told you to?” she exclaimed. “I did, after all elsq had failed,” answered George depectedly. “And what did he do then?” “Do!” echoed the young man, passing his hand wearily through his hair.
