Nothing New Under the Sun.

A speaker, at a recent meeting of the West Side Civic club gave the following illustration of the fact that there is nothing new in the “second choice” idea in elections: “During the war with Persia, In which took place the battle of Marathon, it waa the custom of the ancient Greeks to have a different man in charge of their army each day. He waa chosen |>y the various generals from their number, by the second choice method. “The day before the battle of Marathon, when the election was held to determine who should be the leader in the Impending struggle, each of the generals voted for himself, aa first choice and for Mlltiades as second choice. Mlltiades was thus easily the successful candidate and the result is history."—Milwaukee Free Press.
