Negroes Plan Theft From White Man And Land in Jail.
Mt. Vernon, Ind., July 17. —Perhaps one of the boldest attempts at robbery that has ever been attempted in this city occurred at the L. & N. station this evening when Jodie Johnson, a mine superintendent of Harrisburg. 111., after flashing a large roll of money before a crowd of negroes, Tvas followed to the station, where a plot was formed to get him intoxicated before boarding the train and then carry out their plan to relieve him of his wallet. Before leaving, however, one of the negroes gave the ticket agent a tip as to the plan of his confederates. The other negroes got wind of their exposure, and made a desperate attempt to kill the informer, but were prevented by the timely arrival of police. Three negroes were placed in jail pending trial tomorrow.
