FORMER RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY KILLED IN OKLAHOMA.

Helped to Fill Balloon with Gas, Caught in Ropes and Carried High ' " ' In Air Before Falling.

Charles Schultz, formerly of thio county, and a brother of Miss Minnie Schultz, of this city, was killed at Phillips, Okla., on July 6th. Schultz was working with a cement gang at Phillips, which is a small town near Colgate. The town was holding a celebration on July 6th and one of the attractions was a balloon ascension. Schultz was helping the aeronaut fill the balloon with gas and when the balloon was released Schultz was caught in the ropes that dangled from the aircraft. The rope was wrapped about one of his feet and he is thought to have been carried a distance of 250 or 300 feet in the air before he fell After dangling head downward for a time, he seemed to catch hold of the rope and to pull up with his head upwards. Then he fell and the great throng that witnessed the sight let up a cry of horror. Almost every bone in his body was crushed. His remains were shipped to Francesville, where burial took place Monday. George Newman, formerly of Rensselaer, accompanied the body and will remain for a few days’ visit in Rensselaer. The drouth that has practically killed all crops in Oklahoma is being felt in all lines of trade and Mr. Newman says that building operations are almost at a standstill. He thinks seriously of returning to Rensselaer after himself and brother finish the job on which they are now working in Oklahoma. . - -
