LOCAL HAPPENINGS. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Maxwell, of Rensselaer, Monday. * A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dan N. Chupp, of near Surrey, the Fourth. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fry and daughter visited in Hammond from Sunday until over the Fourth. Judge Hanley is home from Valparaiso, having got through with tne Gary riot cases. *:■ The Home Grocery has rented B. We unloaded, last week, another car of Eastern cane granulated sugar, the best sugar for preserving fruit. JOHN EGER. Roy C. Stephenson, who has been working as a switchmen in the yards at Dalton, S. Dak., is here for a visit with his mother, jtirs. W. H. Stephenson. Walter Lee returned from Michigantown, Clinton county, Monday evening, where he had gone to close out a stock of merchandise he recently traded for. He succeeded in disposing of nearly the entire stock. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hurley spent the Fourth at Lafayette, and returning in the evening, they found twenty of their relatives there with supper spread on the'lawn. The occasion was Mrs*. Hurley's twenty-first birthday. George W. Miles, fish and game commissioner of Indiana, has issued 300 commissions for deputies to protect fish and game all over the state. The squirrel season, which opened last Saturday, will close Oct Ist. B. Forsythe has at last decided to retlrd'from business and will shortly re* turn to Rensselaer to make his home. He is now In Rensselaer and his store at Winamac is closed for a few days while arrangements are being made for a ten days’ closing out sale At the conclusion of the sale he will invoice what is left of the stock and sell it in a lump.
