Unfrayed Scallops.

Some housekeepers object to the scallop on embroidery because It frays in washing. This can be overcome in several ways. The surest is to buttonhole a second time over the purled* edge, when the scallop has been worked and cut'out. Another method is to run the outline of the scallop with machine stitchinf before buttonholing; or in cutting leave a narrow margin and turn back under the scallop and hem to the material. If these are too much trouble, at least wash the linen before cutting out The material shrinks and is much less likely to fray. Where the entire piece is not washed the embroidered edge can be dipped in lukewarm water for a few minutes, then iron dry and later cut out close to the purled edge.
