William Snyder, a prisoner charged with wife beating, twisted a water pipe off and allowed the water to flood the East Chicago jail. He said he was trying to drown the whole police force, which has quarters below the cell he occupied. He was sentenced to six months in jail for beating his wife. President Taft yesterday denied the petitions for a pardon for John R. Walsh, the Chicago banker, and the latter must remain in the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kans., where he is serving a five year sentence for the wrecking of the Chicago National bank and its allied institutions.
