The record of the postal saving# bank system in France has been one of continued progress. In 1882, wbenf this Institution was established, tba total number of postal banks in operation was 6,024 with 211,580 deposit accounts remaining open at the close of the year. These accounts, Including Interest due depositors, amounted to $9,187,116, the average sum of the deposits being $43.41. On December 31, 1909, the latest year for which complete statistics are available, the number of banks had increased by nearly 2,000, the deposit accounts numbered 5,542,882, and the deposits, including Interest, represented an aggregate amount of $816,456,866, averaging $57.08. The expenses of administration during 1900 amounted to $1,504,678, and the net profits to $526,786. It may bo recalled that individual accounts are limited by law to 1,600 francs ($289.50). When an acoount exceeds this the surplus is invested by the bank in national bonds. The total value of the bonds purchased in 1909 was $2,080,676. The withdrawals.
