Five and a quarter minutes before noon, Rensselaer time, Tuesday, March 21, was the time of the spring equinox; that is, the time when the sun seems to us to be in the plane of the earth’s equator, passing from the south of it to the north of it. The actual time when the sun was in the plane of the earth’s equator was thirteen and a half minutes before noon. But, as it takes the rays of light eigh: and a quarter minutes to travel from the sun to the earth, the apparent time is five and a quarter minutes before noon.
