Interested in Seeing Jasper County Raise Better Fruit.
J. D. Brosnahan and wife, who were at the home of her parents, Mr. aijid Mrs. John English, most of the winter, arrived at their home at Kiesling, Spokane county, Wash., last week, and under date of March 4th, Mr. Brusnahan addressed a letter to The Republican in which he enclosed a spraying calender for the year 1911, which eminates from the Washington agricultural experiment station. Mr. Brosnahan, was much interested in the fact that Jasper county and, in fact, most of the central states, raise so little fruit, and he frequently expressed himself as confident that much better results could be attained if the orchard owners would give the same attention to their fruit trees that is given in the fruit countries. He says that first of all the trees should be pruned. The calender is quite thorough and gives various formulas for the cure of the various evils that beset fruit trees. It says that no one formula will cure everything and classifies the various insects and gives the approved formulas for each, telling when to spray and what to use. Based upon this circular we shall try to give a formula for best use in this county. The one recently furnished by Charles Halleck, of Fair Oaks, was a good one, and if the orchard owners or tree owners will trim their trees, spray them liberally and give them the attention they deserve, there is- a good chance for greatly improved fruit this year and for all future time. The Republican will be pleased if some apple grower will call and go over the spraying calendar furnished by Mr. Brosnahan, assisting in the formulation of the spraying receipt most appropriate for use in this county.
