Fish Substituted for Candy Disappointing Present for Teachers.
Kankakee Valley Review. At the teachers’ institute of Walker township, held last month at Walker Center. Trustee Fred Karch was presented by the teachers with a token of their esteem in the shape of a five dollar gold piece. Fred, in order to v 4 clever and stop Jim Smith and John Fettet from codding him about spending the five, came to Wheatfleld last Friday and purchased a nice large package of confectionery with which he intended treating the teachers and those in attendance at the institute last Saturday, but it Beems that when Fred loaded up his supply of purchases at Pinter’s store, he had by mistake taken another package in place of the candy, and as you know, Fred never likes to cod anybody better than get one on Jim Smith, John Pinter, John Pettet or the Editor, and presented the supposed package of sweet goods to the schoolmams with a few well chosen words for the occasion. When the package was unwrapped and four good-sized chunks of codfish were presented to view, whew, Fred's face was red enough to burn his whiskers off. The editor has been unable to* learn whether It was Jim Smith or John Pettet that lost the fish.
