Christmas Candle and Tree.
The old custom of tbe lighting of tbe Christmas candle, which is still observed by tbe Irish peasantry, chiefly at Candlemas or Old Christmas day. has become quite obsolete In England. A relic of tbe observance In England is. however, preserved. An old stone socket carved with a lamb Is shown in the buttery of St John’s college. Oxford. which was used in former days for holding the Christmas candle. The Christmas tree was practically unknown In England a little more than half a century ago.
