John Whitman, 50 years old, cut his throat at Evansville Wednesday afternoon and then jumped into a vault in an attempt to commit suicide. He was rescued and taken to a hospital. It is believed he will recover. Hospital physicians say he is drink crazed. He has been In the Southern Hospital fpr the Insane. The appeal to the supreme court of J. Frank Hanly against Fred A. Sims, secretary of state, a case involving the legality of the Vincennes university bond issue of $120,548, has been set for oral argument Nov. 2. Each side is granted one and one-quarter hours, a quarter of an hour more than is customary in the supreme court. Joseph B. Foraker, former United States senator, whose withdrawal from the republican campaign in Ohio late Wednesday caused a sensation in political circles, refused Thursday to utter a single word of comment on or in explanation of the circumstances that led to the developement. He denied himself to interviewers and sent word out by his secretary that he had “nothing to say.” Corn husking has started quite generally all over the county and from some parts comes the report that the crop is not going to be as good as had appeared before » husking started. Where the corn was blotfn down during the earing period there are very small ears or none at all, and in some cases the corn is not well filled out. The drouth of the midsummer shortened the ears. Farm labor, especially husking labor, is difficult to get and there is a demand for huskers at good wages. V
