COLLEGEVILLE.
Tuesday, Nov. Ist, the Feast of All Saints, being a holiday, there will be no classes. Rev. A. Weyman, C. P. P. S, on "Wednesday returned from St. Anthony’s hospital, Chicago, entirely recovered from the effects of the operation, and at once took up again the ■work of his classes. Rev. Ig. A. Wagner, C. P. P. S., left for the Catholic University, Washington, D. C., to continue his scientific and mathematical studies. * The following visitors were entertained at the college during the last week: Rev. X. Felden, J. McArdle, Monroeville, Ind.; Mrs. Hugh McCaffrey, Peru, Ind.; John R. Welch. Mrs. Alice Welch, Miss Anne Welch, Francis O’Reilly and Thos. Darmody, Indianapolis; Miss Rosa Beck and Mrs. Mary Curran, Rensselaer. While passing through Rensselger, Mr. John W. Kern stopped long enough at the college to give the stdJents a pleasant and instructive talk on the necessity of forming a strong and firm character in their youthful Mays. It was ingeniously illustrated by many incidents from his own varied career. The rmpression that Mr. Kern succeeded in making on his hearers was, indeed, favorable l The football game last Sunday in which the varsity defeated the Rensselaer team by the decisive score of 28 to 0 was fast and at times far rougher than necessary. The local team is showing wonderful improvement since Coach Kirk has taken charge of their plays. All the players were green at the game when he was engaged, and therefore, the showing at the last performance speaks well of his coaching abilities, and of the application and attention given by his raw material to football work. The frequently announced game with the Goodland A. A. is again advertised for next Saturday afternoon. The overstate team has always found some excuse for not appearing, but now there is no world series of base ball games in progress and the sick “gag” has been overworked, so that there is a possibility that the aggregation will put in its belated appearance on the date announced. The game will be called at 2:30. Admission 25 cents.

Is John B. Peterson a Corporation Lawyer? A Question for Frank E. Babcock to Answer. Mr. Peterson stated in his speech in Rensselaer that he was not a regular attorney for any corporation and had never been. Ihe following blackface type is a verbatim reprint of a letter Mr. Peterson wrote to Baughman & Williams, of Rensselaer, on Dec. 15,1906, in reply to a letter that firm had written to him to ask dim to aid them in a law suit. Mr. Peterson’s letter will come as'a confession that he considered himself almost exclusively occupied with corporation work. The letter is at The Republican office, where it can be seen by any person m Jasper county or the 10th congressional district. It was written by John B. Peterson and is over his signature. * j The letter reads: Office of % JOHN B. PETERSON / Crown Point, Indiana w D , 0 ....... Dec. 15, 1906. Mess. Baughman & Williams, Rensselaer, Ind. Gentlemen: Yours of Dec. 14th relating to the case of Spitler et ad. vs. Grady et al. received. Owing to my relations with certain railroads and other corporations, lam unable to accept employment in this case. My tim. is taken up almost exclusively by corporation work. I shall, therefore, have to decline your kind offer. I appreciate, however, your good will, and as you are probably not thoroughly acquainted with all the lawyers liere, I would suggest to you the name of Mr. J. Frank Meeker, as a reliable mar. who will undoubtedly be willing to give you such assistance as you need here. I have no hesitancy in recommending him. I think if you suggest to him that he has been recommended by me, he will give the matter very careful attention. Very truly yours, JOHN B. PETERSON. Jasper County Democrat, please copy it, if you can’t answer.
ANNONYMOUS WAG CALL FOR HIS RAG.
Some wit or wag has sent us a rag, And suggests to us that we chew it, Thus taking a rest of the Burk’s bridge jest, And makes threat if we don’t we will rue it. To which direful defy we make cheerful reply: The rag, he should not thus abuse it; For judged by his fright, it is evident quite, That his mother will soon have to use it
Error Corrected.
Chas. F. Stackhouse was not the superintendent of the work at the time the extension of Burk’s bridge was bbilt. He was trustee of Marion township at that time but was not the superintendent of that work as the Republican had been informed. At that time the road leading to the bridge was considered a county road but it later tranpired that it was a township road. Mr. Stackhouse had nothing to do with building of the extension, but he could have had without any discredit to himself. The extension is 140 feet in length and in other respects meets up with the specifications, except for the charges filed in the Jasper County Democrat by some unnamed personage as mysterious as the eight legislators whom John Kern accused with having sold out to the brewers for the election of Shively' to the senate. Public Wedding.
“Maloney’s Wedding,’’ at the Ellis theatre next Friday night. This is the James L. McCabe musical absurdity which for a number of seasons has served to amuse thousands of theatre patrons. The bill was formerly produced by Billy Barry and Hugh Fay under the title of “McKenna’s Flirtation,” which proved to be a great subcess. It is an extremely funny musical farce comedy, with a theme full of burlesque situations, indescribably ludicrous, movements that are brisk, and dialogue tearse, bright, humorous and running over with repartee, leading to climaxes having a whirl and “go.” The. theme and dialogue lead to the natural introduction of specialties, both individual and general ensemble. The musical numbers are of the latest and catchiest kind. The dialogue is such a rapid fire of funny lines with amusing situations that the audience does not recover from one shot before there is a double discharge from another source. The leading character is that of an Irish comedian but there 'are four other distinctly good parts, strongly drawn and vafied in characterization.
