Daughter of Julius Huff Has Mild Case of Diphtheria.
Ada, the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Huff, residing south of Rensselaer, has been sick since last Friday with diphtheria, having returned home from the James school, which she attended, feeling ill. The family physician sent a culture from the throat to the state board of health and his diagnosis of diphtheria was sustained and the school was closed, and quarantine established on all who had attended it. C. M. Blue is the teacher. This is the same child that had the scarlet fever a few weeks ago. The case is apparently a mild one, and the physician administered antitoxin at once and it is believed that she will recover and that a spread of the disease can be prevented. Another case of diphtheria has been reported. It is In the family of Albert DeFries, the Thayer merchant, being the little daughter of his wife, who was formerly Mrs. Wilson. The child is 5 years old. Anti-toxin was administered. The schools were closed Tuesday and Mrs. Jene Crowell, the teacher, came to Rensselaer that day. The cases in the Newland neighborhood have all recovered and it is believed the disease there has been stamped out. The state board of health has sounded a general warning all over the state to be on the lookout for diphtheria and scarlet fever and quarantined families should not rebel at the authority of health officers, for the speedy suppression of the disease by rigid quarantine may save many lives.
